Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center: Improving Care for Service Members and Their Families

Approximately 1.7 million people experience a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the United States each year. The men and women serving in the United States military face a greater risk of obtaining these injuries during operations, combat situations and training. Advanced research and education efforts can improve the treatment of care for affected service members and their families. By treating and tracking injured service members throughout the Military Health System, healthcare professionals can measure the impact of care on a member’s long-term health, and educate and influence senior leaders, clinicians and the civilian population.

As a leader in TBI research, the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center serves active duty military, veterans and their beneficiaries with coordinated care throughout 16 Army, Navy and VA medical treatment centers – ensuring optimum care within the Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Nation.
