Company using geospatial tools and cameras to provide real-time traffic condition updates

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – CSRA Inc. (NYSE:CSRA), a leading provider of next-generation IT solutions and professional services to government organizations, today announced its operating subsidiary, CSRA State and Local Solutions LLC, received a contract from the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) to continue providing IT engineering and software development to improve the state’s collection and dissemination of roadway and traffic information to SHA and the public, enabling proactive management of Maryland’s ground transportation system. The Coordinated Highways Action Response Team (CHART) contract is valued at $56 million, over ten years, if all options are exercised.

The software that underpins CHART, allows the state of Maryland to assess and regulate traffic disruptions and inform local citizens of traffic conditions. The traffic conditions are displayed on overhead electronic billboards as well as updated on the traffic information line, MD 511. These communication methods enable commuters and travelers to plan alternate routes and maximize roadway efficiency.

“Over the last two decades we’ve worked with SHA to build a highway network using the best technology to equip transportation officials with the information they need to improve real-time operations for Maryland’s highway system,” said Paul Nedzbala, executive vice president, Health & Civil group at CSRA. “We will continue to develop more advanced technology tools as the state expands its’ intelligent transportation capabilities to keep ahead of growing traffic demands.”

CSRA is enhancing Maryland’s Intelligent Transportation System through advanced geospatial tools, traffic cameras and process automation, which assist CHART operators and other stakeholders in planning for and responding to events on the roadways, while simultaneously providing real-time traffic condition updates. The CHART program started as a ‘reach-the-beach’ plan to manage summer traffic inbound and outbound to the Maryland Eastern Shore, and has expanded to a statewide, integrated traffic management system with data exports to other agencies and neighboring states.
